Pelvic Pain Care in Pregnancy in Guelph

Pregnant woman sitting up with lower back painRolling over in bed. Pulling on trousers. Getting out of the car. When these ordinary movements start to hurt, you may wonder what to change and who to ask. Pelvic discomfort during pregnancy deserves attention, even if you’ve been told aches are part of the experience.

Dr. Alyssa Shepherd offers individualized chiropractic assessment for pregnancy-related muscle and joint concerns. The appointment starts with a conversation about where you feel discomfort, what triggers it, and how it affects your routine.

Why Everyday Movements May Feel Different

Pregnancy changes the demands placed on your back, hips, and pelvis. As your body changes, so do your posture, balance, and movement. Your history, activities, and stage of pregnancy also matter. No single explanation fits everyone.

Pelvic girdle pain describes discomfort around the front or back joints of the pelvis. You may notice it near the pubic bone, across the lower back, or around the hips and groin. Walking, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg may become uncomfortable. Even finding a comfortable sleeping position may take more thought than it used to.

Not all pelvic pain comes from muscles or joints. You should also discuss new symptoms with your maternity care provider.

Prenatal Training with a Personal Approach

Dr. Alyssa Shepherd, D.C., is a registered chiropractor in Ontario and a member of the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. A graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, she is Webster Technique certified, a level-2 certified NeuroEmotional Technique practitioner, a trained birth doula, and a certified Prenatal and Perinatal Educator.

That background informs her conversations with pregnant patients, while chiropractic assessment remains focused on the spine, joints, and related function, the mind-body connection is also taken into account. Your chiropractor will consider your health history, previous injuries, prenatal care, and the movements you find difficult, and choose examination procedures and treatment techniques to help you achieve your goals in seeking support. And questions are always welcome. :)

Care Decisions Built Around You

Depending on the assessment, a plan may include chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue techniques, Activator Methods® instrument adjusting or mind-body work with NeuroEmotional Technique. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic approach that may be considered following assessment. It is often thought of as the method that ‘turns a breech baby’, although what it actually does is to normalize pelvic mechanics such that Baby can assume their most optimal position – for most babies (although not all) this is head-down.

Practical discussion may cover getting dressed, changing positions, pacing activities, or adapting tasks that bring on discomfort. No technique is automatically included because you are pregnant.

When Your Maternity Provider Comes First

Contact your maternity care provider promptly for severe, sudden, or worsening pain, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, fever, or reduced fetal movement. Referral to another provider may be recommended when findings fall outside chiropractic scope.
