Sciatica in Pregnancy in Guelph

Pregnant woman sitting on a blue exercise ballMaybe it’s the drive home that triggers it. Or you stand up from the sofa and feel a sharp pain travel down your leg. With so much changing during pregnancy, it’s easy to wonder whether this is another ache you’re expected to put up with.

You don’t have to guess what’s going on. Dr. Alyssa Shepherd offers chiropractic assessments for back, joint, and related nerve concerns, with time to talk about what you’re feeling and how it’s affecting your routine.

Is That Shooting Pain Sciatica?

Sciatica describes symptoms linked to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots. Pain often runs from the lower back or buttock down one leg. Some people also experience tingling, numbness, or weakness, which can extend into the foot.

But leg pain doesn’t always mean sciatica. Muscles and joints around the hip or pelvis can also cause discomfort in nearby areas. Where it hurts is one clue, not the whole explanation.

As your pregnancy progresses, your posture, balance, and movement habits may change. Those details matter during an assessment, but they don’t automatically mean your baby is pressing on a nerve.

Start with What You’ve Noticed

You don’t need medical terms to describe your symptoms. Saying “it starts after I’ve been sitting” or “my foot sometimes feels numb” gives your chiropractor useful information. Mention changes in strength, too, even if they come and go.

Dr. Alyssa Shepherd, D.C., is a registered chiropractor in Ontario and a member of the College of Chiropractors of Ontario. She graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and has additional prenatal education, Webster Technique certification, and training as a birth doula as well as birth companion training.

Her approach starts with your history, current prenatal care, and what has become difficult. That might be getting through a work shift, sleeping, or picking up your toddler. Examination may include checking movement, joint function, sensation, and strength, with positioning chosen for your stage of pregnancy.

The findings help determine whether chiropractic care is suitable or another provider should assess you first.

A Plan You Can Ask Questions About

For identified muscle and joint concerns, recommendations may include adjustments, Activator Methods® instrument adjusting, or soft tissue techniques. Your chiropractor explains each option before you decide, including its purpose, risks, and alternatives. There’s room to ask questions or take more time.

Your chiropractor may also discuss sitting positions, activity pacing, or tasks that bring on symptoms. Any exercise advice should fit your examination findings. A stretch someone else swears by isn’t necessarily right for you.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Seek emergency medical assessment for new difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or buttocks, or severe or worsening weakness or numbness in both legs. Contact your maternity provider promptly for worsening symptoms, bleeding, fluid leakage, or other pregnancy concerns..
